How Intercessors & Prophets relate

HOW PROPHETS AND INTERCESSORS RELATE.

“I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.  Ezekiel22; 30.

“INTERCESSORS CARRY BURDENS OF THE PEOPLE WHILE PROPHETS CARRY BURDENS OF THE LORD.”

Often intercessors are called to stand in the gap and build walls for the people who have been plundered and have no hope, no clothing, and are powerless. It’s the primary call of the intercessors to mediate between the people who have been ruined in sins and have all heavy burdens.  This means intercessors are called to stand between God and man, the main goal of an intercessor is to seek mercy from God on behalf of the ruined and they never seek judgment.

Intercessors pray:

  • They release the Holy Spirit and the angels to do the Fathers will on earth.
  • They stand together to resist the attacks of the enemy on behalf of a church, a city or a nation.

Therefore Intercessors are called to carry the burdens of the people by building the wall and mediate that the people may get life.  They act as the hinges in the door to carry other ministries forward and local government vehicles that carry rubbish from anywhere. They have the greatest work to do on earth. And this requires a lot being in the presence of God since their authority comes from Jesus Christ by virtual of their call, the authority of intercessors reduces when they disobey and there authority depends much on obedience and it is moved by Compassion.

Intercessors are unique in their calls and they always have a heart made behind a certain plea or prayer. Their prayers request depends much on how they feel towards to the situation God has brought for them.  And most of their work is given by the Holy Spirit. Indeed in Ezekiel22; 30, God was looking for any intercessor and there was none and therefore his wrath overtook those whom it was intended. Intercessors in most cases are friends of God since they are to take more time in the presence building their relationship with him.

In this kind of situation they are very important because they are appointed to against the plans of the enemy as the Holy Spirit reveals. Intercessors are not supposed to speak most of the revelations that would inspire fear upon the church, their work is to pray against every plan of the enemy so that they may not come to pass. Each time bad things happen in the place and yet it was revealed it means intercessors were sleeping and this kills the ministry of intercession. They are supposed to be pure 24hours.  Most intercessors have messed because they do not know their roles, and mostly they want to speak as if they were prophets and this cancels out their ministry by overlapping that authority.

This was demonstrated by Moses in the wilderness when the children of Israel had rebelled against God. Moses was able to stand in the gap for the children of Israel to seek mercy.

Then the Lord said to Moses “How long will these people reject me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all signs which I have performed among them?  I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation a greater and mightier than they.” And Moses said to the Lord; The Egyptians will hear it, for by your might you brought these people up from them and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, Lord among these people; that you Lord, are seen face to face and your clouds stand above them, and you go before them in a Pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by Night. Now if you kill these people as one man, then nations which have heard of your fame will speak saying because the LORD was not able to bring this people to the land which He swore to give them, therefore he killed them in the wildernesses. And now I pray, let the power of my Lord be great, just as you have spoken, The Lord is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression; But He by no means clears guilty, visiting the iniquity of the father on the children to the third generation to fourth generation. Pardon the iniquity of this people I pray, according to the greatness of your mercy, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now. Then the LORD said I have pardoned, according to your word. “But truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD. Numbers14; 13-20.

The children of Israel had really sinned against God despite of working for them and they believed him not instead they started comparing things of Egypt with what God had done, they never Glorified God in whatever he did, they only demonstrated they were not happy with what they were facing and wanted to go back to Egypt. But Moses was able to calm down the fury of God towards the children, he sought for mercy.

Though Moses had facts on how was interceding for the children he first accepted the judgment of God that they sinned and then advised according to what God has promised the children of Israel, meaning Intercessors are supposed to remind of the promises not judgment, may be this will reduce calamity. (Interceding with Wisdom and Knowledge of God). Moses stood in the word of God when interceding for Israelites to God and seeking mercy, intercessors are supposed to be filled with the knowledge of the word of God to know about his judgments and promises so that they may not contradict their ministry. Moses used Promises God had promised the children of Israel it had been recorded by him, intercessors are supposed to record all promises of God for the church in order to always remind of God of fulfilling them. Otherwise when intercessor forget about promises of God, then God will keep quiet on the church and the church will be crippled by the enemy who is the Devil.

The reason why so many disasters are occurring in the nation is that intercessors are not doing their work of standing in the gap for God to save people and the land. (A Letter to the sleeping Intercessor).

Intercessors are therefore called to carry the burdens of the people and the prophets are called to carry the burdens of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Prophets are more concerned about the church, the nation and Christians in doing the will of God. Most of their work is also characterized by intercession though they are called to speak on behalf of God.

Prophets speak:

  • They explain God’s purpose for churches, cities and nations to his people.
  • Some warn God’s people of danger and explain how they should respond to it.
  • A few speak to the world and warn of judgment and describe how it can be averted (Jonah and Nineveh).

This was described in the challenging call for Jeremiah in the Babylonia confrontation when the Prophets, priest, kings had fallen. True prophets will often bud in the days of apostasy and will fight against the false prophets and they appear especially when the whole nation is astray to carry the judgments of God in a nation, church, and the Christians, they raised to show the right way and that people may return to repentance.

To speak for God is not something just simple, you have to go through the entire mill for transformation and until you are totally purged in the mouth before you can speak for God. You will have to pass through the wilderness to be approved and accredited by God just as Jesus Christ did.  Prophets call comes along with judgment, repentance, and intercession to help the lost to come back in the right paths of God. And this Jeremiah wailed for the people of Israel after seeing the great judgment that would happen to them, he wailed knowing it would be a disaster against those who disobey.

The Call of Jeremiah

The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,

before you were born I set you apart;

I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

“Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”

But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”

The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?”

“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied. The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”

The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you see?”

“I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.”

The Lord said to me, “From the north disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the Lord. Jeremiah1;4-15.

The definition of a prophet is person or Christian whose mouth has been touched and eyes have been washed to see clearly and speak for God. He is a spokesperson for God. Jeremiah was washed in the eyes to see clearly and declare what he has seen. Most prophets have not been touched by God on the eyes to see, so they see wrongly.  God must inform us that we can now see clearly before we could deliver his message and distort his instructions once we see badly.

The Prophetic anointing is the tank of fuel that fuels intercession and purity, therefore intercessors cannot function without the prophetic anointing, meaning the intercession ministry will only be successful under prophetic ministry, it will support their revelation and their gifts will be enabled to flow in the ministry.

Merged Roles

The role of prophet and intercessor sometimes merges in one person. When this happens, the person should be very careful to be clear about what they are doing. When they receive a revelation about the future, they should seek guidance from God about whether is for the prayer closet or the prophetic platform. They should also sort out if it is something God wants to do or a plan of the enemy that he wants to foil.

This was done by Abraham on behalf of Sodom and Gomorrah when God was angry and that city was about to face the wrath of God. God gave Abraham the intercessor a chance to seek mercy on behalf of the city but Abraham stopped on the way, the intercession only saved Lot and the children but it did not save that city because Abraham gave up thinking he was bothering God. If Abraham had continued to pray and plea the city would have been saved.  Because the worker of intercessors is to make peace and reconciliation between God and Man. Remember Jesus Christ comments in the New Testament, that if this gospel had been preached to Sodom and Gomorrah they would have repented. (Mathew11;23). Abraham being a Prophet did not do much on the intercession, sometimes prophets and intercessors can merge in one role when that happens it becomes hard for both to differentiate and of course the results would not be much just like Abraham. That’s why we need both Prophets and Intercessors standing differently and independently there would be productivity than this who merges to the other. You cannot expect much.

Abraham did his part but still it was not enough and according to him he thought he was disturbing God over the issue yet God has already given him authority.  This is where intercessors get it wrong when they cease praying when God has not commanded them to stop, if they stop the disasters will continue and destroy the city just like Sodom ended.  The reason Jesus Christ gave was that the people of Sodom was that there was no gospel and no salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ in that City, they lacked guidance so they behaved they way they wanted but he traced his pain that if they had been preached to they would have been standing till today. Sometimes if intercessors stop on the way things will be messy. However much intercessors pray still would need someone to warn the people to turn to repentance.

Abraham Intercession gives more light and learning lessons for both intercessors and Prophets in the modern church today.

When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way. 17 Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[c]19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”

20 Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous 21 that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”

22 The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord.[d]23 Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[e] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

26 The Lord said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

27 Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”

“If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”29 Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?”He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”30 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?”He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”31 Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?”

He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?”

He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”

33 When the Lord had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home. Genesis18; 16-33.

If you actually  look at the scriptures Abraham had power to make God to save Sodom because of his intercessory power,  Abraham stopped interceding on 10 number of Men in the city of Sodom, he was a lifesaving intercessor, Abraham did not seek Judgment but rather Mercy from the Lord, only that he stopped on 10 number of people who were righteous and he stopped there and God also continued to do his work, this shows where intercessors stop in intercession , its where God would also stop, this calls for intercessors to intercede without ceasing and this would bring more Mercy of God in a given Area. (The Power of an intercessor). Intercessors prefer life than death in this case they reflect God’s character who tries every way to save his people, only that people disappoint they prefer death than life.

Learning lessons from the story of Abraham and the Sodom.

  1. Abraham stood in the gap for the city so that it may be saved as he thought mercy for the city not judgment, Abraham never rejected the Judgment of God which was upon Sodom and Gomorrah. And so the intercessors are supposed to seek the mercy of God.

  1. Abraham had authority of an intercessor to turn the wrath of God down, he only lacked insight on intercession because God had given him open place for intercession, had he reached on 5people God would have saved that City till today.

  1. Another thing you can learn is that you see Abraham a more deep discussion with God, this means that intercessors have higher relationships with God than anyone else except the prophet if they remain standing in their roles. Since both Roles merge into one. God called Abraham his friend, the intercession is moved by Favor of God.

  1. It reveals what intercessors should do, their work is to pray and risk their lives for others to get life. You find Abraham risking his life with Holy fear to plead for more times. But they are supposed to stand in holy fear, holy humility in order to be accepted by God. He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”32 Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?”He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.” Genesis18;31

  1. It also reveals that prophets can merge into intercession role just like Abraham did. Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?” Genesis18;27.

  1. It also shows that intercessors are supposed to keep standing before the Lord until he has shown mercy . The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the Lord. Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare[e] the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”Genesis18;22-26.

The problem with intercessors of modern church are standing in presence of God to seek their own things not seeking mercy of God. (The lost intercessors and misguided intercessors).

  1. Another lesson for intercessors to learn is that revelation of intercession comes from God on what he wants to do or what the enemy is planning therefore intercession is inspired by God’s revelation. Abraham did not know until God revealed to him what he intended to do in Sodom. Sometimes intercessors may not understand why actually God visited. If they would ask they would be revealed deeper. This is demonstrated by Abraham. He did not ask why God had visited apart from the promises of God. (The Big surprise of God’s Visitation to his workers). Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.[c]19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” Genesis18;17-18.

  1. Another lesson for intercessors is that intercession is moved by humility and obedience and its their source of Power. Abraham just did that, Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes, 28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?”

Clear Voice

The absence of a prophetic voice in a city creates uncertainty about the cause of traumatic events and whether they have any spiritual significance. Most of the commentary on the events usually come from pastors whose focus is on providing pastoral care to people who had lost homes or family members. Their main goal is to put guilt and guidance out of scope, so they leave God’s purposes out of the situation. Unfortunately, many other Christians find this explanation inadequate and are uncertain about how they should respond to these events. They see Jesus applying spiritual significance to physical disasters (Luke 13:1-5) and want the same for their time.

Without a clear trumpet call, the people go and look for own answers. They get muddled and grab what they can. The dreams and voices that circulate from the fringes of the church where people have gone for insight, but they produced only fear and confusion.

Revelations that God has given to intercessors often circulate as prophecies about the future. This is creates confusion, because the revelations contain no guidance to Christians about how to respond. There is no call to repentance for the people of the world or condition that must be met to avert the disaster. This is not surprising, because that was not their purpose.

The intercessors should focus on doing their job by standing in prayer against the plans of the enemy that God has revealed to them. If the intercessors and are fulfilling their calling, these events will not take place. God has revealed these things to the intercessors, because he does not want them to happen.

The thirst for revelation that emerges during a crisis cannot be quenched by the revelations received by intercessors.

Where there is no revelation, the people are left naked (Prov 29:18).

Unfortunately, scraps from tables of the intercessors will not satisfy this hunger for revelation.

The problem is lack of revelation. We should be praying that God will release a clear prophetic voice that we may have better understanding of God’s purposes. If God is giving warnings about events that are going to happen, the prophets should be listening and seeking guidance about his plans for his people and asking what changes must take place to avert the disaster.

Many prophetic people get in touch with their gifting’s long before they cultivate the corresponding wisdom, humility and character that is necessary to succeed in prophetic ministry. In the beginning, they may appear arrogant or pushy because of their zeal. As years go by, their pushiness usually increases because of fear, hurt and rejection. The average person who has been in prophetic ministry for 10 years is pretty beat up and bruised. This is especially true if the prophetic gift was active in their early years. By the time they are 40 or 59 they are often very guarded and suspicious of authority figures ( – How Pastors Relate to Prophets).

Jeremiah realized his gift before he cultivated wisdom and knowledge to succeed in the ministry of the prophetic and this same applies to the intercessors they do have their gift of intercession during childhood in defending more of their friends always seeking peace even though the other party had done greatly wrong. Its just these callings are hard to detect unless you receive your direct from the Lord Just like Jeremiah, both of these ministries are more embedded in the Body of Christ Jesus.  Jeremiah struggled in the prophetic ministry and he messed up often until God told him to change his attitude.

Therefore thus says the Lord: “If you return, I will restore you,
and you shall stand before me.If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless,
you shall be as my mouth. They shall turn to you, but you shall not turn to them.
And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, Jeremiah15:19-20

Jeremiah could have forgotten that he was carrying the burdens of the Lord and not the people.

Most people in the modern church have not noted this error of carrying the burdens of the Lord or the people.

People pleasing is a killer for all ministry, and especially prophetic ministry. Prophetic people who tell people what they want to hear will lose touch with God (Gal 1:10; Ezek 13:2). A true prophet should not expect the praise of men (Luke 6:26), they will seek only the approval of God.

Human love can taint a word. Sometimes love blinds the prophet, causing him or her to give a good prophetic word when the Lord wanted to give a word of correction (Cindy Jacobs – The Voice of God p.186).

I could see the discontentment of the men and women who come to these services. Out of this has arisen the desire for what they think they lack in life. (Most often these are not needs but are nothing more than wants or lusts). This idolatry opens them up to receive words that speak directly to those wants or lusts and strengthens these desires or idols. All that is necessary for them to hear what they want is that they find “ministers” who are lacking in the area of the fear of God. These will be concerned with their reputation, appearance, growth, and agendas. They can be bought or persuaded with the right reward, thus they will speak to them in light of their desires rather by the faithful light of the Word of God (John Bevere Thus Saith the Lord p.76).

Few self proclaimed ‘prophets’ are anything more than teachers. I see too much of the man pleasing spirit everywhere. I have just preached a little on Samuel. Now there was a prophet. Are there any so-called prophets operating in the realm of Samuel? If any, I don’t know of them, and have never heard of them. Are there self-proclaimed prophets around the world? They are more abundant than cent pieces, and yet just about every single one of them are more travelling teachers who couldn’t prophecy themselves out of a paper bag (Ivan Poulter).

One of the greatest problems a young prophet or prophetess can have is an attitude of presumption (Cindy Jacobs – The Voice of God p.124).

Regardless of which ministry we are called to, we must not copy or emulate other people, but rather the One whose image we are called to bear. Schools for prophets may be helpful, but they will be counterproductive if they just bring forth “parrots”, who all prophesy the same things (Rick Joyner – The Prophetic Ministry).

I could go on and write about the prophets and the Intercessors of course the treasury of God is still full, but due that the word of God is active too much food may produce diminishing returns, as per this subject of Prophets and Intercessors I will keep on tackling the two ministries in the coming subjects.

LETTER TO A RELECTANT PROPHET AND INTERCESSOR.  And this would also bring out the pitfalls of the two ministries and how they can be restored, Prophetic Ministry must be restored in the Church to release the gifting of God and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, while Intercession will release the power of the Holy Spirit to work in the church.

Praise be to God whose life is eternal and to him alone is wise . if you fall under these two ministries of prophetic and intercession you much guidance and the Knowledge of the word of Christ Jesus to grow your gifting in edification of the body lest you be deceived and become just like a parrot prophesying where there is no revelation of God.

Everyone needs this article and every church needs this article to restore the ministry of the prophets and intercessors.  Brethren take this seriously and give your ears to the Voice of the Holy Spirit and you shall not get lost.

Peace to you all people of God, and those who call God out of pure hearts. Grace be multiplied to you all.

I remain Asher Namanya the soldier of God the Father in Christ Jesus our Lord.
