The Severity of God

Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.  Romans11; 22.

There is a great saying among the born Christians and other religious affiliates which says that God is so merciful and therefore he cannot take his people to Hell and he will always forgive no matter what we sin about. And this kind of evil thinking has led many astray and they never come back to repentance because they know after all they will be forgiven all their sins at the end so they keep sinning even when they know the judgments of God and never go by them thinking it will be allowed . And I believe God is all Merciful but this has measure according to how we respond to his mercy.

Christians have taken God for granted in their day to day lives, they think God is merciful and never mind about their acts of sinful nature.  But according to Romans11; 22, there is another side of God especially when we fail to respond to the standard of Faith he has exerted on Christ Jesus the only savior of the world.  God shows severity towards those who have fallen, but his mercy and kindness is shown to those who keep in the kindness of God.

Most Christians do not want to know about the other side of God, they only want to the one side of God even when they are not doing what God requires of them, that is holiness and righteousness, as Paul defined severity of God comes to those who live in unbelief and unbelief is normally who fail to accept Jesus Christ as “the savior and the Lord” and those who sin when they know what they are doing especially when they have come to the knowledge of the truth and have been used by the Holy Spirit, have tasted the word of God and seen its goodness, have tasted the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  If any Christian knows about the works of the Holy Spirit and receives the Holy Spirit and tastes the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the power of the age to come then later falls out and does the same sins he used to commit before his salvation journey, this Christian would have blasphemed the Holy Spirit and trampled on the mercy of God and his grace, then no longer remission of his sins and there is not sacrifice for sins because he would be crucifying the Lord Jesus Christ again on the cross.

I have seen many Christians who want to be like David, that David sinned against God when he slept with Beersheba the wife of Urial and was forgiven for his sins, and many Christians fail to go deeper to understand why God actually recorded that incident, because he know that Many Christians would fall into the same fate of David, but God had wanted that Christians should learn from David and should not act like the way David did. Most Christians more so fail to know that actually God executed his judgments even when David repented, for example the child died because that was a judgment, and David brought a curse upon his lineage, there came incest in the family lineage of David and all these came as result of sin of sexual immorality with the wife of Uriah the Hittite. And there rose also another war from his lineage for the throne from Absalom the son who wanted to be the judge and take on the throne of David, when he started judging people outside the gate.

God is merciful but David had to do the right thing and continued in his mercy after knowing the sin was against God he repented and he had to produce the fruits worthy of repentance to be acknowledged by God. He went and offered to the altar. But the judgments of God remained and were never changed because he faced the wrath of God from another side that is severity of God.

This is what happened to see the severity of God when we sin after we have known to the knowledge of truth.

Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house. And I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel and before the sun.’” David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has put away your sin; you shall not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child who is born to you shall die.” Then Nathan went to his house.

David’s Child Dies

And the Lord afflicted the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and he became sick. David therefore sought God on behalf of the child. And David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground. And the elders of his house stood beside him, to raise him from the ground, but he would not, nor did he eat food with them. On the seventh day the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he did not listen to us. How then can we say to him the child is dead? He may do himself some harm.” But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David understood that the child was dead. And David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.” Then David arose from the earth and washed and anointed himself and changed his clothes. And he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. He then went to his own house. And when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate. Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child died, you arose and ate food.” He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.” 2 Samuel12;9-23.

When you look at the story of David and Beersheba the wife of Urial, David knew what he was doing because he was king, and therefore he committed the sin against God knowing that God was merciful like the Christians say and its true God is all merciful provided that you keep in his kindness  but severity when you fallout.  What you learn from the story of David and the wife of Urial is that God respects his word and if his wrath comes upon you have to serve the punishment of God while repenting over something you knew about before doing it.

Another lesson would be that when we sin knowing what we are doing especially when we have come to the knowledge of truth we despise God and his commands and shows that we can work by ourselves leaving God vulnerable and laughed at by his enemy the Devil and God would not stand that, and that’s why you see the child died because Satan would continue to mock God for the child and it would have left a foothold.

There is much severity of God when we sin after we have come to the knowledge of the truth and have tasted the gift of the Holy Spirit.  And this can be found in psalms51 when David was repenting over the same issue because the Holy Spirit had departed from him and he had to do repent and come up with the fruits worthy of repentance and he was restored, any bible reader could see that David was easily restored after incidence of Beersheba but that is not true, David went through a horrible moment and was tormented by the Devil and that’s why you see David repenting genuinely to God asking for a new Spirit and restoration of the Holy Spirit in him.

Another lesson you can learn from the David story is that God’s wrath does not go empty, if it comes to you then you have to serve the punishment it was meant to do even though when you repent, David’s Child died even though he fasted and repented over the issue. The reason was he had ashamed God when he knew what was doing was extremely bad because he had put the judgments of God behind his back and followed the mind of  his flesh to have pleasure rather than fearing the Living God whom he had therein dwelling.

We also learn that Repentance is not just enough, we have to bear the fruits worthy of Repentance and this was corrected by John the Baptist, because Christians think if they repented they would be restored back to their proper domain before they were and this is not true, when you sin after knowing the truth and have moved in the power of the Holy Spirit you go back to Zero and then have to produce the fruits worthy of Repentance and David did this. And John had something to say to the Jews who wanted to be re-established in their former ways and this was no longer possible, John demanded the fruits worthy of repentance not only changing.

In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,

‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ ”

John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. Mathew3; 1-8.

Those who attempted to remain the way they were and never produced the fruits worthy of repentance were sent away empty handed. In Christ Jesus our Lord and the savior we are supposed to have fruits worthy of repentance we are not supposed to presume but rather we are to go through experience and be molded to bear those fruits to escape God’s wrath like the Pharisees who john was surprised at.

We are not meant to continue doing our past things and sins as we used to do before knowing God through Christ Jesus.  And this is where we have a problem as Christians of the modern we think God has changed according to the generation and this is misleading we do fail to understand like the Jews who realized to come into repentance through John and produce the fruits worthy of repentance instead we inherit our past habits and never come to the knowledge of living the truth. There is knowing the truth and living the truth, the modern Christians know the truth but never come live by or in the truth and this is where we disappoint God, we are always crucify the Lord of Mercy all over again even when we have known the truth and in this kind of life where is the fruit of repentance? Of course nowhere to be seen since we want to live a life pleasing our flesh, by going into pleasures of this world. We have surely trampled on the grace of God and taken the blood of Jesus Christ as mere thing which will bring the severity of God in this generation and of which some are serving this.

What does the grace of God teach us?

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Titus2; 11-14.

This is what Paul understood and every Christian today must know that grace of God has appeared to give us salvation by giving us ability to deny ungodliness, worldly passions and live a self controlled, upright and godly lives in this present world while we wait for the blessed hope of eternal life, this means that we are meant to use grace of God in achieving godly lives, and grace empowers instead to have ability and deny worldly desires of this age. But this is opposite in the present church instead they use the grace of God to sin, to live ungodly lives, to have sexual immorality and that would nullify the purpose of grace for this present world and then the Christians cannot wait for the blessed hope because eternal life is for the godly, the self controlled and the upright with God.

What will happen in the end?

If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Anyone who rejected the Law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay, “and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Hebrews10; 26-31.

Now if people died under law on witnesses of two or three, what will happen for those who have been witnessed by the blood covenant and the Angels, and entire world for trampling underfoot the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed for many and this was witnessed by Many, Heavens and earth were witness for this, only severity of God will be much to bear, for those who have mis used the grace of God for purposes of excusing them from holiness and do sin thinking they will be sanctified again when they have known what to do. I tell you the truth it will be a fearful judgment and before judgment you would have served the wrath of God. Why die you man or woman of God?  It’s dreadful indeed to fall into the hands of an angry God who avenges the wicked.

Paul discerned the old covenant and the new covenant and saw actually the new covenant was better and had better promises leaving the old covenant as a shadow of what was coming and he really saw what God had inserted in the new covenant in order to bring people back to himself through bloodshed of his son Jesus Christ and without the death of Christ it could have been impossible to be redeemed and so if we fail to see what Paul saw in the grace of God then we shall see the severity of God.

Does God hate his people? Of course not if he did then he should not have sent his Son to die on the cross for all, but in some scriptures he says;

It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring. For this was how the promise was stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”

Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac. Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! For he says to Moses,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”f

It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

One of you will say to me: “Then why does God still blame us? For who is able to resist his will?” But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?  ”Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?

What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction? Romans9; 6-22

Does that mean that we should sit at home and then relax God will have mercy on whom he wants to have mercy on? Of course not, to him he gives mercy in such scriptures provided you keep in his kindness and that can come only we stayed in the Holiness, judgment, commandments he has established in Christ Jesus to be fulfilled.  His mercy still stands as long as we in the mercy using the grace of God to obtain righteousness that he established in Christ Jesus to whom who was tempted and never came to sin- therefore we have no excuse to win the case before God, he has the power to change if we trust in his Son, and cling to him, therefore the mercy triumphs over judgment.

Someone will say then why do we to keep the commandments in order to keep in the mercy and that question is misleading because it is he who said leave your home and go to Canaanites and there I will give you a blessing and This was by Faith through Abraham to keep in the promises of God had to be obedient all his life and that he trusted that the God who called him shall do all in order to inherit eternal life. Abraham accepted Gods direction and indeed if we are Abraham’s offspring then we are to move like the way he obeyed God without questions, You know Faith is the substance of things which cannot be seen with our eyes and this pleases God, that if we keep ourselves pure presently then we are closing on eternal life and we eagerly wait for the life to come in holy, godly living, righteously living and that we would have done just like Abraham did, he did what God told him and did not know when he would inherit but trusted God’s word and through Abraham we are the inheritors of Christ’s richness the Gift of eternal life.

So the mercy of God will continue to those who are willing to continue in his mercy and someone says in Hebrews that;

It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. Hebrews6; 4-12.

And we that for everything is possible before God but in the light of the scripture regarding blasphemy of the Holy Spirit it is impossible to bring back those who have known the truth and have tasted the goodness of the Holy Spirit and the word of truth to repentance if they fall away because they would behaved like the land that produces only thistles and thorns instead of fruits of the Holy Spirit.

My dear brothers and sisters please be careful and take heed lest you fall away and be trapped in the same fate of the above scripture and that is when you will see the severity of God.  Do not say that let me sin today and then tomorrow I will repent, that will be the end of you. And you will not be brought to repentance. Remember that God has given the Spirit of sound mind, love and holy fear not terror.

In some of the scriptures God he himself speaks that touch no unclean and I will receive you, touch no evil I will restore you, you will be my people and I will be your God.  Consider these promises as children of God and live in reverence for God and his Son the Saviour God and our everlasting God, for his kingdom endures forever.

Have this in mind that God has another side of severity and those who fall away meet his side and I can assure it will be terrible, therefore with that in mind fear God and serve him in holiness with godly fear and you will be successful in all days of your life. Do not go for what the desires my brother and sister, but what God is desiring for you, seek to know the will of God and be adherent you will keep in his kindness. God is so Faithful what ever he has promised he will Faithful provided you remain faithful to him in all your works. Do not be like the dogs out who only vomit and come back to eat the vomit, if you have been saved from sin then hate sin and all its passion not forgetting that the wicked shall not escape God’s severity and his great judgment.

I ask the Holy Spirit on behalf you that, he keeps you alive in Christ Jesus and keep these words on your lips and in your hearts and never to depart from them lest you forget and fall into the hands of the enemy the devil who failed and only waits destruction and his Angels for the eternal Fire in the Lake Fire.

May the grace of God and mercy of God be upon you all my brethren and keep in Christ Jesus our Lord he will save you. Do not be one sided but open minded for you shall be saved in the end, the one who called you is Faithful and will do it for you.

Peace be with you all.

I remain Asher Namanya the Bondservant of God the Father and The Lord Jesus Christ to whom all things submit for the Glory of God.
